are two Dennis Two-Ton Motors. This type appears to be
eminently suited for the requirements of this Colony. Ita
weight is not too heavy for the rural and upper level roads,
and its power, capacity and dimensions are all that could
be expected for its weight, and I am inclined to think that
ultimately it is bound almost entirely to supersede its
only rival - Manual Transport.
The other Lorries belonging to this Department
5. There should also be a great field for a light
but substantial and reliable One-ton or 30-gabee. Lorry for runabout delivery work everywhere.
6. The average cost of running the Aveling and
Porter Steam and the two Dennis Motor Lorries mentioned
above is between $25.00 and $30.00 per day per lorry; these
amounts provide for interest on capital outlay, depreciat-
ion, repairs, and all running expenses. In arriving at these figures, the "life" of the lorry has been assumed as
six years.
7. Touring cars are likely to increase in numbers
especially when the outlying parts of the Colony, now being
opened up, are utilized for residential purposes.
8.
The total mileage of roads of the Colony is 215
of which 137 is available for mechanically driven traffic.
9. Within the City limits, the highways are surfaced
to take heavy traffic and consist principally of granite setts or asphaltum sand carpeting both laid on a cement
concrete foundation.
10. The country roads of the Colony are surfaced with ordinary water-bound macadam, and tar painted. These roads are not sufficiently strong to carry anything beyond two
tons in weight.
